ROMANIAN DOCUMENTARY FILM

Alexandru Vlad’s documentaries begin from concrete places and from people he follows without commenting on them. The films have twice been awarded by UCIN, in 2014 and 2016, nominated at the Gopo Awards in 2015, and received an honourable mention at the San Francisco Film Awards.

They include "The Persistence of Memory", listed on IMDb. The method is consistent: long presence in the filmed place, editing that does not hurry, a refusal of the voice-over that would explain what we are seeing. The documentary is not used to prove a thesis but to leave room for a person to exist on screen.

The same attention runs through the books, and the border between the two practices is more porous than it looks: several poems began as shooting notes, and some shots stayed in a film because they worked like a stanza.
