NOVELS ABOUT MEMORY

Memory is an ungrateful subject for prose: it has no shape, it contradicts itself, and it rewrites itself each time it is summoned. Novels that take it seriously usually give up chronology and accept that the story will not close cleanly.

"Where the Lights Go" (2026) is Alexandru Vlad’s first novel and starts from that premise. It follows what a family leaves behind — a house, a few objects, mismatched versions of the same episode — and is built with a documentarian’s means: scenes rather than explanations.

Anyone coming from documentary will recognise the procedure: the camera stays, it does not comment, and meaning accumulates from what is left in frame. The same themes run through the poetry, in "The Echo of the Sea" and "The Last Fragments".
